What Is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to choose people you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you're ever unable to make them yourself.
Many people worry that creating a Lasting Power of Attorney means giving up control. In reality, you'll remain in control of your own affairs for as long as you're able to make your own decisions.
If a time comes when support is needed, whether through illness, an accident or a loss of mental capacity, the people you've chosen can legally step in and help when it's needed.
There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney. One covers Property and Financial Affairs, while the other covers Health and Welfare decisions.
Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, even close family members may be unable to make important decisions on your behalf without applying through the Court of Protection, a process that can be both stressful and expensive.
A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you peace of mind that the people you trust most can help when it matters most, while allowing you to remain in control of your own affairs for as long as possible.

The Best Time To Put A Lasting Power Of Attorney In Place Is Before You Need It
A Lasting Power of Attorney can only be created while you still have the mental capacity to make one. By putting one in place now, you remain in control of who can help you, how decisions are made, and what happens if circumstances change in the future.
Most appointments take around 40 minutes and can be completed from the comfort of your own home.
Understanding The Two Types Of Lasting Power Of Attorney
Most people are surprised to learn there are two different types of Lasting Power of Attorney. Each document serves a different purpose and together they provide comprehensive protection for both your financial affairs and personal welfare.
This allows your chosen attorneys to help manage:
- Bank accounts
- Savings and investments
- Paying bills
- Property matters
- Pensions
- Financial organisations
This allows your chosen attorneys to make decisions about:
- Medical treatment
- Care arrangements
- Daily welfare
- Living arrangements
- Care homes
- End of life decisions
Why Most Clients Choose Both
Most of my clients choose both types of Lasting Power of Attorney to ensure every aspect of their affairs is protected. Whilst each document can be prepared separately, having both in place provides complete peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
